Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim announces ban on rooftop restaurants in city

Kolkata, May 2 (UNI) Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Mayor Firhad Hakim on Friday announced a blanket ban on rooftop restaurants in this city, three days after a blaze in a central Kolkata hotel killed 14 people on Tuesday, official sources said.
Hakim, also the West Bengal urban development minister, announced a complete ban on rooftop restaurants and commercial setups atop the buildings in this metropolitan city. His announcement came after a talk with city police administration and the fire brigade department following a series of fire, including that of Rituraj Hotel in the busy and congested wholesale market -Burrabazar.
The hotel fire, which was first noticed in the restaurant, killed 14 people, two of them pre-teen boys and a woman. Sources said the KMC would soon issue a notice on this matter prohibiting setting up restaurants on the rooftops as well as in the commercial buildings.
Under Rule 117/4, the KMC will issue formal notices to rooftop restaurant owners, instructing them to shut down operations immediately. If defied, strict legal action will follow. The rule states that every terrace on the topmost storey of any building shall have common access and shall not be subdivided.
City mayor Firhad Hakim said, “Only the administration alone can not be held accountable for everything.
Today, we are making it clear that no one can sell rooftops or staircases. Rooftop cafés and illegal constructions will no longer be allowed.
A top level committee comprising all key departments has been formed following a directive from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The committee will meet on Monday and Tuesday and submit a detailed report within a fortnight, sources added.
