Kolkata North proposes shifting of 39 polling stations ahead of electoral roll revision

Kolkata, Nov 3 (UNI) Ahead of the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls, the District Election Office of Kolkata North has proposed relocating 39 polling stations under its jurisdiction. The final electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on January 16.
District Election Officer Smita Pandey, who is also the municipal commissioner of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), said an all-party meeting was held at the KMC headquarters on Tuesday. Representatives of various political parties were handed a list of polling station premises proposed for rationalisation or relocation in accordance with the State Election Commission’s instructions.
“If political parties suggest any changes, we will consider them. The last date for submitting objections and recommendations is November 10, while the rationalisation and rearrangement of polling stations are scheduled to be completed by November 13. The premises selected for polling stations should be clean and have basic facilities. In some cases, polling has been conducted at the same premises for years, despite the available space being inadequate for the number of voters. This creates problems with seating arrangements. We have, therefore, proposed shifting 39 polling stations,” Pandey said.
According to the DEO, Kolkata North has around 1,835 polling stations. The authorities are also considering setting up additional polling stations in high-rise buildings with more than 300 residents.
The integrated draft electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on November 23 as part of the SSR. The commission will also conduct special campaigns from November 28 to December 20 to assist citizens with the revision process.
The Kolkata North DEO’s office will have to receive and dispose of claims and objections by January 8, 2027, while the final electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on January 16, Pandey said.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, have alleged that the SSR process, particularly the proposed relocation of polling stations, is being carried out at a rapid pace. They have also demanded that only schools and colleges be designated as polling stations. UNI NN NST
