Korea Open: Prannoy bows out, Anmol and Tanvi keep India's hopes alive

New Delhi, Nov 4 (UNI) India’s HS Prannoy crashed out of the Korea Open 2026 after suffering a straight-game defeat to South Korea's Yoo Tae-bin in the men's singles first round at the Jinnam Stadium in Yeosu on Wednesday.
The 38th-ranked Indian, a World Championships bronze medallist, went down 21-23, 15-21 in 47 minutes against the home favourite, who won a bronze medal at the Asian Games.
Prannoy was India's only representative in the men's singles main draw after Lakshya Sen, fresh from his Hylo Open title, pulled out of the BWF Super 500 tournament.
The early exit extended a difficult run for the former world No. 6, who has now suffered three successive first-round defeats on the World Tour, including at the Hylo Open and Arctic Open. He has managed to progress beyond the second round only once in 15 tournaments this season, reaching the semi-finals of the Vietnam Open in September.
Prannoy had an opportunity to take control of Wednesday’s contest after recovering from a 12-7 deficit in the opening game to move ahead 19-16. However, Yoo fought back to draw level at 19-19 before clinching the game 23-21.
The South Korean carried that momentum into the second game, racing to an 8-3 lead. Prannoy could not mount another comeback as Yoo closed out the match to book his place in the next round.
Anmol, Tanvi advance to second round
There was better news for India in the women's singles, with Anmol Kharb and Tanvi Sharma both advancing to the second round.
Anmol, who made the semi-finals of the Hylo Open last week, defeated Canada's Rachel Chan 21-19, 21-18 in 38 minutes. She faces Japan's second seed Akane Yamaguchi in the round of 16 on Thursday.
Tanvi, the Taipei Open champion, overcame Japan's Manami Suizu 21-16, 12-21, 21-17 in a contest lasting one hour and 12 minutes. Her next opponent will be decided by the first-round match between Japan's fifth seed Hina Akechi and China's Xu Wenjing.
India's mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Rawat and Maneesha K came close to advancing but lost 22-20, 12-21, 22-24 to China's seventh seeds Zhu Yi Jun and Li Qian in 58 minutes.
The women's doubles combination of Ritika Thaker and Sonali Singh withdrew before their scheduled first-round match against Australia's Laudya Chelsea Griselda and Nozomi Shimizu on Tuesday. Arjun Reddy Pochana and Achutaditya Rao Doddavarapu had earlier exited in the men's doubles qualifying rounds.
The Korea Open concludes on Sunday.
