Kudalasangama non-veg row escalates, BJP demands action

Bengaluru, Oct 7 (UNI) A controversy over alleged consumption of non-vegetarian food near Basavanna’s Aikya Mantapa at the revered Kudalasangama pilgrimage centre in Bagalkot district has intensified, with the BJP demanding immediate action from the Karnataka government.
The controversy erupted after a video purportedly showing a family consuming non-vegetarian food near the Aikya Mantapa went viral on social media. The incident has triggered strong reactions from devotees and political leaders, who questioned the conduct of visitors at a site closely associated with 12th-century social reformer Basavanna.
The BJP accused the Congress government of failing to protect the sanctity of the religious centre and demanded that the authorities investigate the incident and take action if any rules were violated.
BJP leaders also sought stricter regulations at Kudalasangama, including clear instructions to visitors on maintaining the sanctity and cleanliness of the temple premises.
According to reports, devotees and security personnel confronted the family after allegedly noticing them consuming meat. The family reportedly denied consuming meat and stated that they were eating eggs before leaving the premises.
The allegations have not been independently established, and the exact nature of the food seen in the video remains disputed.
The controversy has also drawn a sharp response from Sri Ram Sene chief Pramod Muthalik, who demanded immediate arrests of those responsible and warned of a statewide protest if the authorities failed to take action.
Kudalasangama is a major pilgrimage centre associated with Basavanna and the Lingayat spiritual tradition. The alleged incident has therefore raised concerns among devotees over maintaining religious decorum at the historic site.
The BJP has called for a thorough inquiry to establish the facts and urged the government to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
