Landslide disrupts traffic movement in Lahaul-Spiti

Lahaul-Spiti, June 4 (UNI) The district witnessed temporary disruption in vehicular movement on Wednesday afternoon after a landslide blocked the vital Sansari-Killar-Tindi-Tandi (SKTT) road near Tindi following recent snowfall and inclement weather in the region.
According to sources in the District Police, the landslide occurred around 3 PM, cutting off movement along the strategic mountain route frequently used by locals, tourists and supply vehicles. Restoration work was swiftly initiated, and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) was alerted for immediate clearance.
"Due to a landslide near Tindi, the SKTT road was temporarily closed. Commuters were advised to avoid the route until clearance was completed," said a police advisory earlier in the day.
The administration also urged travellers to monitor official social media handles for real-time updates.
By late evening, the BRO had cleared the debris and restored movement on the road. The police later confirmed that the SKTT road was open for all vehicles and traffic was being regulated.
Despite the reopening, authorities advised drivers to remain cautious while navigating hilly and landslide-prone stretches.
"The road is now green for all types of vehicles, but caution is still necessary due to unpredictable weather," officials said.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of road infrastructure in high-altitude tribal districts like Lahaul-Spiti, where even minor weather disturbances can severely impact connectivity.
With monsoon season approaching, officials have reiterated the need for heightened vigilance and timely alerts to ensure the safety of commuters.
