Himachal withdraws free diagnostic facilities for 14 categories

Shimla, June 6 (UNI) The Himachal Pradesh Government has withdrawn the provision of free diagnostic tests and X-rays for 14 beneficiary categories in all government health institutions across the state.
The decision, communicated through a letter by the Department of Medical Education, is aimed at strengthening the financial autonomy of Rogi Kalyan Samitis (RKS) operating at various health institutions.
The official communication, issued by the special secretary (health), cited a previous office letter dated May 26 and directed the director of medical education, director health services, and the Director of National Health Mission to implement the decision.
The withdrawal is part of a broader push to empower RKSs with greater decision-making authority to manage their financial requirements.
Following this, the administration of Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC), Shimla, has announced a proposal to impose a nominal registration charge of Rs 10 for all patients at the time of hospital registration.
According to a press note issued by the IGMC medical superintendent on June 6, the executive committee of the RKS will finalise the proposal, which will subsequently be sent for approval to the general body meeting of the RKS.
This move follows a Cabinet decision that allows all Rogi Kalyan Samitis in the state to levy registration and other user charges to mobilise resources for essential services such as sanitation and minor repairs.
