Leopard dies in jungle clash in Bahraich

Bahraich (UP), May 25 (UNI) A leopard was killed during struggle between two male leopards in the Kaudiala beat of Katarniaghat Wildlife Division in Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh, a Forest Department official said here on Sunday.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) B Shankar said that the body of the leopard was recovered on Saturday, about 50 meters inside the Indo-Nepal border. "According to the post-mortem report, the leopard died due to rupture of the trachea," he said.
He said that both the leopards were young and they clashed to establish dominance in the area, in which one leopard died after being seriously injured. "A team of three doctors conducted the postmortem of the leopard in the presence of Forest Department officials and the body was cremated," he said.
The DFO said that this area, known as Trans Gerua, is a densely forested area, where leopards caught from rural areas are released under local wildlife conservation policies. "This year, about 18 leopards have been released in this area, due to which the number of leopards has increased to about 150 in the forests and about 100 in the rural areas. Due to the increase in the number of leopards, competition for limited resources has increased, and possibilities of such conflicts are also increasing," he said.
According to the Forest Department, the leopard's carcass was identified during the regular patrolling of the local forest workers, after which the SDO and Ranger also reached the spot. Departmental officials are worried about this incident, and it has been decided to increase vigilance at the local level under wildlife conservation.
