Giri river in spate in Sirmaur district; flood warning issued

Nahan, May 25 (UNI) Torrential rains triggered widespread disruption across Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district on Sunday, with the Giri River flowing above the danger mark and forcing authorities to open floodgates at the Jaton Barrage twice to manage the swelling waters.
According to officials, incessant rainfall for nearly six to seven hours caused a sudden rise in the river’s water level.
Dinesh Kumar, posted at the barrage, informed the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) about the emergency releases at 5:20 am and 5:28 am. Initially, Gate No. 4 was opened, followed by Gates No. 3 and 4.
A flood warning was subsequently issued for residents living along the riverbanks.
The downpour also triggered multiple landslides, blocking key roads in the Nahan division and severely affecting vehicular movement. Superintending Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), Alok Javneja, said that the Banog-Surla, Rama Dhaun, Banethi-Bagthan, Dadahu-Becharabagh, and Kamalahad roads were completely closed due to landslides. Restoration work has been initiated, and the PWD expects to reopen all routes by afternoon.
Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Verma has appealed to the public to remain vigilant and avoid going near rivers and streams. She also urged village panchayat heads and NGOs to help spread awareness in vulnerable areas.
While no casualties have been reported so far, normal life remains disrupted.
The district administration is closely monitoring the evolving situation.
