Chandigarh, June 19 (UNI) Approximately 51.33 per cent voting was recorded for the Ludhiana West assembly constituency bypolls, Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C said today.

Polling began at 7 am and progressed in an orderly and smooth manner.

CEO said that as per data uploaded till 1900 hrs voter turnout was 51.33 per cent.

A total of 14 contestants were in the ring, whereas the constituency comprised 1.74 lakh registered voters.

The bypolls, necessitated by the untimely demise of AAP MLA Gurpreet Gogi in January this year, saw a multi-cornered contest.

AAP had fielded Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora and the Congress relied on former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who had lost to Gogi in the 2022 assembly elections. BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal's candidates were Jeevan Gupta and Parupkar Singh Ghumman respectively.

The counting is scheduled for June 23 and the results are likely to be announced the same day.
