Maha: 15,891 killed in road accidents in 2.5 years, reveals RTI

Nagpur, Sep 30 (UNI) A total of 15,891 people were killed in road accidents on national highways over the past two-and-a-half years, highlighting the serious road safety challenge, according to information obtained under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
The RTI data revealed that overspeeding continues to be a major factor making highways increasingly dangerous for commuters.
According to the information, 5,812 people were killed in 11,285 accidents on national highways in 2024. In 2025, the death toll rose to 5,941 in 11,381 accidents.
Between January and August 2026, another 4,138 people lost their lives in 7,980 accidents on national highways, taking the death toll during the 32-month period to 15,891.
The figures underscore the continuing challenge of ensuring road safety and enforcing traffic regulations across the highway network.
Expressing concern over the statistics, road safety experts described several stretches as “death traps” and called for urgent corrective measures to improve road infrastructure, traffic management and enforcement of safety norms.
The RTI information indicated that a significant number of fatalities were linked to overspeeding, negligent driving, poor road conditions, and inadequate safety measures.
Illegal parking, violation of lane discipline, drunk driving, overspeeding, vehicle fitness, and potholes on the roads are also the major causes of accidents.
Experts stressed the need for better engineering of accident-prone stretches, stricter implementation of traffic rules and greater public awareness to reduce the rising death toll.
The disclosure has once again drawn attention to the growing number of road accidents and the need for coordinated efforts by government agencies, traffic authorities, and civic bodies to prevent loss of life.
