Maha: Ajit Pawar attributes Nagaland exodus to party ‘unease’

Mumbai, Jun 1 (UNI) Explaining the exodus of all seven NCP MLAs in Nagaland to the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP (AP) president Ajit Pawar said on Sunday that the MLAs had been experiencing unease for several months.
“Two to three months ago, the seven NCP MLAs from Nagaland met me and expressed that they were not able to function effectively. I also discussed this with the Chief Minister there. There was unrest among those MLAs,” Pawar said.
He added that since all seven MLAs joined the ruling party together, the anti-defection law does not apply in this case.
In a significant political shift, all seven Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLAs in Nagaland have merged with the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), giving Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s party an absolute majority in the 60-member state assembly. With this move, the NDPP’s tally has risen from 25 to 32 seats.
The Speaker of the Nagaland Assembly confirmed that the merger met all constitutional requirements, and the assembly’s party records have been updated accordingly. The NCP had emerged as the third-largest party in the 2023 assembly elections, but the latest development leaves the NDPP and its ally BJP in a commanding position.
Ajit Pawar also addressed unrelated incidents in Maharashtra, including a recent case of violence against a woman in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and a car accident involving students in Pune, emphasising the importance of legal recourse and ongoing investigations.
