Thane engineer held for espionage, remanded in ATS custody

Mumbai, June 2 (UNI) Ravindra Verma, a 27-year-old engineer from neighbouring Thane city, has been remanded to police custody until June 5 following his arrest by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on charges of espionage, an official said on Monday.
Verma, employed as a Junior Engineer with a defence technology firm, allegedly passed sensitive information about Indian naval assets to Pakistani intelligence operatives.
According to ATS officials, Verma had access to restricted areas, including the Mumbai Naval Dockyard, through his professional role. Investigators claim that between November 2024 and March 2025, he communicated with a Pakistan Intelligence Operative via social media and WhatsApp, sharing classified details about warships and submarines through sketches, diagrams, and audio notes.
The ATS further revealed that Verma was allegedly honey-trapped by Pakistani agents on Facebook and received payments from both domestic and international sources in exchange for the information. He was arrested last week and, after the expiry of his initial remand, was produced before a Thane court, which extended his custody.
Verma faces charges under Section 3 of the Official Secrets Act for espionage and Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal conspiracy. The investigation is on. UNI AAA SSP
