Maha: Akola court awards death sentence to man in double murder case

Akola, Sep 22 (UNI): In a significant verdict, the Akola District and Sessions Court today sentenced a man to death for the brutal murder of his estranged wife and nine-year-old daughter in a case that shocked the city.
The judgment was delivered by District and Sessions Judge Tejwantsingh Sandhu.
The convict, Manish Kisanrao Mhatre (35), a resident of Deshmukh Fail area in Akola, was found guilty of killing his wife Rashmi Mhatre (30) and daughter Mahi Mhatre (9) with an axe on April 24, 2024.
According to the prosecution counsel, Mhatre had been living separately from his wife for nearly five years due to family disputes and suspected her character.
The incident came to light when the accused himself appeared at Ramdaspeth Police Station and confessed to the crime.
Police subsequently reached the house in Hanuman Basti and found the bodies of the woman and child lying in a pool of blood. An axe, a wooden stick and a blood-stained knife were recovered from the scene.
Investigators said the murders were committed in the early hours of April 24.
A case of murder was registered and a detailed probe was carried out by then Ramdaspeth Police Inspector Manoj Bahure, who later filed the chargesheet before the court.
During the trial, the prosecution examined 14 witnesses, including medical experts and other key witnesses.
After considering the evidence, the court convicted Mhatre and awarded him death penalty along with a fine of Rs 10,000.
Government Prosecutor Mangesh Mankar represented the state in the case.
