Maha govt follows court directive against structures flouting height norms near Mumbai International Airport

Mumbai, June 18 (UNI) The Maharashtra government informed the Bombay High Court today that it had acted on the court directive and removed portions of seven structures near the Mumbai International Airport that flouted height norms.
The government reply stated that the Mumbai Suburban Collector’s office will coordinate with the BMC and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for “any action as may be required to be carried out in the future.”
Earlier, the court had come down on the state and remarked that the authorities cannot sit tight over the height norms violations by structures in the vicinity of Mumbai Airport and endanger the lives of passengers.
A division bench headed by Justice VM Kanade had said that violators must be dealt with "ruthlessly" as their buildings pose a major security threat and obstruct the flight path.
The court had also observed that "There is no point feeling bad for the developers of these buildings or their residents. The authorities cannot just sit and wait for an accident to occur."
The Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) had in a survey conducted between 2010 and 2011, identified large number of structures as obstacles. UNI AAA SSP
