Maha: Sena (UBT) to extend financial support to distressed farmers in Chandrapur

Chandrapur, Oct 16 (UNI) Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) today announced financial assistance of Rs 50,000 each to the families of four farmers who died by suicide in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district and Rs 10,000 each to around 20 economically weaker farmers.
The party’s announcement comes amid growing concerns over drought, crop losses and mounting financial pressures on farming households across Maharashtra.
Sandeep Girhe, the party’s Chandrapur district unit chief, said party representatives would visit the bereaved families and hand over the financial assistance.
He said farmers across Maharashtra were grappling with drought and heavy crop losses, leaving many in severe financial distress.
In a gesture of solidarity with the farming community, the party has decided to forgo its Navratri and Diwali celebrations this year and divert the funds allocated for the festivities towards helping distressed farmers, Girhe said.
Under the initiative, the party will distribute a total of Rs 2 lakh among the families of the four deceased farmers and another Rs 2 lakh among around 20 needy farmers. The overall assistance is estimated at Rs 4 lakh.
Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) has criticised the Maharashtra government’s decision to provide Rs 5,000 to drought-hit farmers and Rs 2,000 to Anganwadi workers ahead of Diwali festival, terming the amounts insufficient in view of rising prices and the agrarian crisis.
The party also objected to the state government portraying the Rs 5,000 assistance as a Diwali gift, contending that it was an advance against drought relief expected from the Centre.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said the state would release the amount to farmers before Diwali instead of waiting for the completion of the central assistance process.
