Maha: SP MLA Rais Shaikh demands strict action against religious discrimination in Nagpur school

Mumbai, May 17 (UNI) After Dayanand Arya Kanya Vidyalaya in Nagpur denied admission to Muslim students on religious grounds, Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh from Bhiwandi East has demanded that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis take strict action against the school.
He also urged all schools in the state be warned not to discriminate against students based on religion.
Speaking on the issue on Saturday, MLA Shaikh said that the Dayanand Arya Kanya Vidyalaya in Nagpur is run by a minority group.
“There was a religious riot in Nagpur recently. In the aftermath, this school adopted a policy of not admitting Muslim students. The school secretary issued such an oral order to the teachers. As a result, the shocking incident of Muslim students' admission applications being kept pending despite the availability of seats has come to light,” he said MLA Rais Shaikh.
Shaikh further stated that the concerned parents have filed a complaint with the Jaripatka Police Station and the State Minorities Commission.
A case has been registered against the school secretary, Rajesh Lalwani, and teacher Simran Gyanchandani under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for hurting religious sentiments.
“This is a serious incident, and strict action must be taken against the school management. All schools across the state should be given a strict warning to ensure such incidents do not occur elsewhere,” he demanded.
MLA Shaikh also emphasised that after the Pahalgam terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir, all the Indian citizens of different religions demonstrated unity and solidarity.
“While there is an atmosphere of religious harmony and unity in the country, the incident in Nagpur involving Muslim students is condemnable and the School Education and Minorities Departments must take strict action in this matter,” he added.
