Maha: VBA slams statewide cattle market ban during Eid, calls for immediate review

Mumbai, Jun 1 (UNI) After the Maharashtra Goseva Ayog ordered the closure of all cattle markets across the state from June three to June eight, coinciding with Eid-ul-Adha (Bakri Eid) on June seven, the move has drawn sharp criticism from the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), which has demanded an immediate review and withdrawal of the order.
VBA state spokesperson Tayyab Zafar told UNI on Sunday that the directive, issued to all Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs), aims to prevent illegal slaughter of cows and related violations under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, which bans the slaughter and possession of cow, bull and bullock meat.
The closure will severely impact farmers, labourers, brokers, small traders and the Khattak Qureshi community, whose livelihoods depend on the legal trade of livestock, he said and argued that the policy is economically unjust and threatens social harmony.
Zafar further alleged that the Goseva Ayog, an advisory body, has overstepped its mandate by issuing direct administrative orders to market committees, which he described as a misuse of constitutional authority.
The VBA also highlighted inconsistencies in the enforcement of the Maharashtra Animal Protection Act, noting that buyers and transporters are disproportionately targeted while sellers are often overlooked, violating the principle of equality before the law.
The VBA has warned that if the directive is not revoked, it will pursue legal action, including filing a public interest writ in the High Court.
The party has urged the government to ensure that markets remain open for the benefit of farmers and small traders and to enforce laws fairly without resorting to blanket closures.
Emphasising the need for a balanced and equitable approach, the VBA called on the government to protect the livelihoods of vulnerable communities while upholding the principles of justice and constitutional equality.
