Maha: Wadettiwar alleges political bias in drought-hit areas list

Chandrapur, Sep 29 (UNI) Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar today alleged that the Maharashtra government adopted a politically motivated approach while identifying drought-affected regions, claiming that constituencies represented by ruling-party ministers received preferential treatment while several Opposition-held areas were excluded.
Addressing reporters, Wadettiwar said that out of 33 talukas represented by ministers in the state government, 28 had found a place in the first list of drought-hit areas notified by the administration.
He contended that farmers from constituencies represented by Opposition legislators were being overlooked in the distribution of drought relief and related benefits.
Accusing the government of indulging in politics during a crisis, Wadettiwar asked the ruling dispensation to refrain from making drought relief decisions on political grounds.
He further alleged that ministers had not visited Opposition-held constituencies to assess the situation on the ground.
The senior Congress leader cited Brahmapuri taluka in Chandrapur district as an example, claiming that despite facing acute drought-like conditions, it was not included in the government's notified list of affected areas.
Demanding immediate inclusion of Brahmapuri, he said assistance to farmers should be based on the actual extent of crop distress and rainfall deficit rather than political considerations.
Wadettiwar urged the government to rise above party lines while extending relief to drought-affected farmers and warned that the Congress would intensify its agitation if genuine grievances were ignored.
He said the party would continue to press for the inclusion of areas that, according to it, were facing severe drought conditions but had been left out of the initial notification.
His remarks came after the Maharashtra government declared drought-like conditions in 265 of the state's 358 talukas and announced relief measures, including crop loan restructuring, concessions in land revenue dues and electricity bill subsidies for affected farmers.
While the government maintains that the exercise was based on rainfall and crop-loss assessments, the Congress has questioned the criteria used for identifying eligible regions and demanded a review of excluded areas.
