Mahanadi water dispute to be resolved soon, says Chhattisgarh CM

Bhubaneswar, Sep 20 (UNI) Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Sunday expressed hope that the long-standing Mahanadi water-sharing dispute with Odisha would be resolved soon in accordance with the Central Water Commission’s decision.
Sai, who is on a two-day visit to Odisha, met Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at his official residence here and discussed issues concerning the two states, including the Mahanadi dispute.
Both Odisha and Chhattisgarh have agreed to accept the CWC’s decision, Sai said, expressing confidence that the issue would be settled through consensus.
The two chief ministers had recently attended a tripartite meeting with union Jal Shakti Minister C R Patil in New Delhi to explore an amicable resolution to the dispute. Following the meeting, Majhi had expressed hope that the issue would be resolved before Diwali.
“We had a fruitful interaction on strengthening cooperation between Odisha and Chhattisgarh and advancing our shared commitment towards the development and welfare of our people,” Majhi said after Sunday’s meeting.
The Centre had constituted the Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal in 2018 to adjudicate the water-sharing dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
Meanwhile, opposition Biju Janata Dal criticised the meeting, saying Chhattisgarh was responsible for creating the Mahanadi dispute and that the matter had been pending before the tribunal for years.
The BJD said Sai’s statement that there was no dispute had raised doubts among people of Odisha and apprehensions that the state government could compromise Odisha’s interests.UNI MK AAB
