Maharashtra agrees to re-examine Telangana’s proposal for 152-metre Tummidihatti barrage

Mumbai/Hyderabad, Oct 26 (UNI) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has agreed to re-examine Telangana’s proposal to increase the height of the proposed Tummidihatti Barrage across the Pranahita River to 152 metres, while stressing that technical, environmental and administrative aspects must be examined before a final decision is taken.
The proposal was discussed at a meeting between Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Fadnavis at the Sahyadri State Guest House in Mumbai on Monday. Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy, the Chief Secretaries of both states and senior irrigation officials participated, according to an official statement.
Uttam Kumar Reddy explained that the height of 148 metres envisaged under the 2016 agreement would not adequately meet the irrigation requirements of the erstwhile Adilabad district. He highlighted the region’s economic backwardness and the long-standing demand for irrigation and drinking water, and explained the technical and operational advantages of a 152-metre barrage. Telangana also offered to compensate Maharashtra farmers whose agricultural lands would be affected by submergence.
Revanth Reddy appealed to Maharashtra to cooperate, citing the developmental needs of tribal and Adivasi communities and the region’s historical significance. He said the project could support the socio-economic transformation of the backward region and strengthen connectivity and economic ties between the two states.
Fadnavis responded positively to Telangana’s request but said the Central Water Commission’s technical examinations and other necessary assessments would have to be completed. He proposed a joint committee headed by the Principal Secretaries of the Irrigation Departments of both states to examine the proposed height, water availability, submergence, affected agricultural lands and compensation requirements. The committee will prepare a roadmap and timeline for further action.
The two Chief Ministers reiterated their commitment to resolving the issue through cooperation and mutual understanding.
During the meeting, Revanth Reddy also invited Fadnavis to the Invest Telangana Global Summit scheduled to be held at Future City, Hyderabad, from December 7 to 9. Fadnavis responded positively and said he would try to attend, the statement added.
