Mumbai, May 23 (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued red and orange alerts across Mumbai and several districts of Maharashtra for May 24, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds as a low-pressure system intensifies over the region.
Residents can expect persistent overcast skies, downpours, and wind gusts reaching up to 60 km/hr, with temperatures being projected to range between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius throughout the day.
A red alert remains in effect for Raigad, where extremely heavy rainfall is likely, while Ratnagiri has been under red alert since May 22.
Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Sindhudurg, and the ghats of Pune and Satara are under orange alert, which means intense rain, thunderstorms, and hazardous wind conditions.
Navi Mumbai authorities have also sounded an orange alert, following foggy mornings and reduced visibility on May 23.
According to the IMD, the unseasonal weather is driven by a low-pressure area over South Konkan and the east-central Arabian Sea, coupled with cyclonic circulation. IMD officials have indicated that the adverse weather is expected to persist through May 24, with the likelihood of evening or nighttime thundershowers.
On May 23, Mumbai experienced cloudy skies and intermittent showers, with humidity hovering at 76 per cent and temperatures peaking at 29 degrees Celsius.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and take necessary precautions as the IMD continues to monitor the situation and provide timely updates.
