Mamata Banerjee seeks urgent SC hearing on plea against ECI freeze on TMC symbol

New Delhi, Sep 21 (UNI) Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal on Monday urged the Supreme Court to urgently list Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee’s plea challenging the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to freeze the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) name and its reserved ‘Flowers & Grass’ symbol amid a dispute between rival factions.
Sibal sought urgent listing, questioning the ECI’s decision to freeze the party’s name and symbol midway through its notification.
Chief Justice Surya Kant said both sides would have submissions and assured that the matter would be listed.
Banerjee’s plea challenges the ECI’s September 18 interim order barring both factions from using the ‘All India Trinamool Congress’ name and ‘Flowers and Grass’ symbol pending a final decision under the Election Symbols Order, 1968.
The Election Commission had allotted alternative names and symbols to the two factions for the upcoming October 6 Assembly bypolls. The faction led by Banerjee was allotted the name 'Mamata All India Trinamool Congress' and the 'Football Player' symbol, while the rival faction led by Ritabratra Banerjee was allotted 'Democratic Trinamool Congress' and the 'Envelope' symbol.
