Man 'held' in Muzaffarnagar not a cop: Police warn against misinformation

Palwal, Oct 15 (UNI) Palwal Police on Thursday dismissed as baseless a viral social media report, claiming that one Ashok, allegedly apprehended in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar, was from the district police force.
Superintendent of Police Deepti Garg said departmental records showed no employee matching the identity mentioned in the viral posts. She added that coordination with Muzaffarnagar Police had also failed to confirm the alleged incident.
Taking serious note of the misinformation, Garg said the district police's social media monitoring cell was maintaining round-the-clock surveillance to identify those deliberately circulating false information.
"Posting or forwarding misleading and sensational content without verification can attract legal action under the Information Technology Act and other applicable provisions," she said.
The SP warned that criminal proceedings would be initiated against those found deliberately spreading rumours or attempting to tarnish the police department's reputation, wherever an offence was established.
Palwal Police urged the public to verify information through official police channels and credible sources before sharing it on social media.
