UP puts villages on School Travel Map, connects young minds with Living Heritage

Lucknow, Oct 15 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh’s rural tourism push is finding a new audience in school travellers, bringing village heritage into the way young people discover their state.
Under the ‘Visit My State Uttar Pradesh’ campaign, a group of 108 students and teachers from Ghazipur visited Shravan Dham in Ambedkar Nagar, highlighting how educational journeys can bring lesser known destinations into focus while opening opportunities for rural communities.
The visit to Chueti Para placed local residents at the centre of the learning experience. Village coordinator Mahendra Gaur and storyteller Sunil Mishra introduced the group from RK Public School, Baheri, to Shravan Dham’s association with the Ramayana account of Shravan Kumar and his devotion to his blind parents.
Visits to temples and sacred ghats connected the story with the landscape and devotional traditions through which the community continues to preserve it.
For Uttar Pradesh Tourism, such journeys offer a way to bring students closer to the cultural knowledge held within villages. Local storytelling gives these destinations an educational dimension, while interactions with residents introduce young visitors to the people who sustain their traditions.
UP Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said, “Young people should have the opportunity to discover the heritage preserved in Uttar Pradesh’s villages. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, we are working to connect this cultural wealth with tourism opportunities for local communities. Through ‘Visit My State’, we want educational travel to build a deeper understanding of our roots and encourage young travellers to explore more of their own state. The families, artisans and local youth who welcome them must also benefit from this engagement.”
Chueti Para is being developed by the Tourism Department under the Agri Rural and Gangey Gram Rural Tourism Initiative. Its combination of religious heritage, riverfront experiences and village hospitality shows how a pilgrimage destination can offer visitors a fuller experience of the surrounding region.
The wider visitor experience includes Sandhya Aarti and bhakti geet at Ramghat, visits to Shravan Kshetra temples and boating at the confluence of the Tamsa, Mandwa and Visui rivers. Nearby Darwan Lake offers opportunities for boating, photography and winter birdwatching, adding a nature component to journeys centred on faith.
Ambedkar Nagar District Magistrate Eesha Priya said, “Hearing the story of Shravan Kumar at a place associated with that tradition gives students a meaningful connection with the destination. Ambedkar Nagar also has river landscapes, local crafts and rural hospitality that deserve greater visibility. Our effort is to bring these experiences together so that visitors discover more of the district and residents participate as storytellers, guides and hosts.”
Homestays in the village offer local hospitality and home cooked meals, while pottery, agarbatti making and regional sweets such as khajla and balushahi introduce travellers to local skills and flavours. Farmstay experiences elsewhere in the district include cottage accommodation, planting and harvesting activities, and meals prepared using fresh produce.
Together, these offerings create opportunities for visitors to spend more time in the area and engage with its rural economy. A storyteller can lead a heritage experience, an artisan can demonstrate a craft and sell directly, and a household can welcome guests.
Educational travel offers an additional route through which Uttar Pradesh’s villages can gain recognition as destinations and their residents can share in tourism opportunities.
