Manipur: CM Khemchand attends 52nd Foundation Day of AMWJU, says state's economy has collapsed

Imphal, Sep 16 (UNI) "The economy of the state is in bad shape after the crisis started in 2023", Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said while attending the 52nd Foundation Day celebration of the All Manipur Working Journalists' union (AMWJU), at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal, on Wednesday.
Following the crisis, the GST revenue which the state used to receive saw a drastic decline. About Rs. 1,200 crore in Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue has been lost after 2023. The crisis has put intense pressure on the government and the state’s economy is the one worst affected, he said.
The CM after arriving at the Press Club paid floral tribute at the AMWJU Memorial Stone in remembrance of journalists who had passed away.
The Chief Minister further stated that people should think of another form of stir as bandhs disturb the entire populace and development.
He also appealed to all Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) of the state not to resort to bandhs and blockades.
Yumnam Khemchand Singh said that the collateral impact of such actions has affected the state significantly in terms of economic activity and development, and appealed for collective efforts to create an environment conducive to economic recovery and development.
The CM informed that the journalist pension amount will be increased from Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 10,000 per month, while the family pension will be increased from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 7,000 per month.
He further informed that during the conflict, many journalists cannot make their contributions to the DIPR Journalist Pension Scheme. For those who cannot pay their contributions, a one-time relaxation will be allowed to re-activate their pensions accounts, he added.
The Chief Minister stated that the above matters will be placed before the Cabinet meeting for consideration.
Regarding pending advertisements, Yumnam Khemchand Singh informed that pending advertisement bills amounting to around Rs. 1 crore has been disbursed. He said that a follow-up meeting with all Heads of Departments has been scheduled for September 25 to further deliberate on the matter.
Moreover, Khongbantabam Ibomcha, MLA, President of Editors’ Guild Manipur, Khogendra Khomdram, President of AMWJU Asem Bhakta Singh, officials, journalists and members of the AMWJU attended the function. Former office bearers of AMWJU were honoured as part of the observation.
