Manipur CM urges students, church leaders to promote peace and harmony

Imphal, Oct 18 (UNI) Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday inaugurated the Catholic Valley Schools’ Sports and Literary Meet at Catholic School, Canchipur, in Imphal, under the theme “Together for a Peaceful Manipur”.
Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, the Chief Minister said student life lays the foundation for an individual’s future by shaping character, aspirations and life goals. He said the theme was meaningful and relevant in the present situation in Manipur.
Acknowledging that some areas in the hill districts continued to experience unrest, Khemchand Singh appealed to Catholic Church leaders, teachers and students to spread the message of peace and harmony, particularly in areas affected by the conflict.
He stressed that collective efforts were essential to restore peace and strengthen mutual understanding among different communities.
The Chief Minister said students were among those worst affected by the conflict, as their academic activities had been disrupted. He added that bandhs and blockades had affected not only students’ education but also the livelihoods of daily-wage earners and others dependent on their daily income.
Emphasising the need for Manipur to progress alongside the rest of the country, he cautioned that continued disruptions could adversely affect the future of the younger generation.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, Khemchand Singh called upon people to work collectively towards building a developed India, with Manipur contributing to the nation’s progress.
He also urged all communities to move beyond past incidents and embrace forgiveness, reconciliation and mutual understanding. He appealed to the people to live together in peace and harmony and work towards building a peaceful, united and prosperous Manipur.
Thirteen Catholic valley schools participated in the meet.
The programme was attended by MLA Karam Shyam Singh, Father Emanuel Kohli of Catholic School, teachers from various schools, students and other dignitaries.
