Manipur pony society discusses pony policy

Imphal, May 25 (UNI) A one-day workshop and consultation on 'Status of Manipuri Pony Breed' organised by the Manipuri Pony Society (MPS) was held at Manipuri Pony Breeding Farm, Lamphelpat on Sunday.
The session was attended by representatives of Polo Associations, pony owners and pony lovers from five districts of Imphal East and West, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur. Later, the gathering recommended submitting the proceedings to the Government of Manipur, highlighting the present and imminent challenges facing the survival of the rare Manipuri pony breed.
The inaugural function was graced by Dr RK Khogendrajit Singh, Director, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services, Manipur and presided over by Prof Ch. Priyoranjan Singh, President, Mainpuri Pony Society, with Dr. S. Joykumar Singh, former Director of Vety and A.H. Services and former President of Manipur Equestrian Association, Lt Col LM Singh (Retd) President, Manipur Equestrian Association and N Bedajeet Singh, Technical Chairman, Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association on the dais.
While welcoming the delegates, L Bedamani Singh, Secretary General of MPS recalled that the first Workshop and Consultation on Status of Manipuri pony breed wad held 19th October, 2014, which mandated the Society to conduct the same Workshop and Consultation after ten years to review the 'Status of Manipuri Pony Breed.'
He also stated that a memorandum was submitted by former President of MPS Dr Ksh Chourjit Singh urging the government for polo and pony policy while declaring the Manipuri pony as critically endangered and save the grazing grounds and natural habitats.
Addressing the delegates, Dr RK Khogendrajit Singh elaborated the recent initiatives of the department, particularly the managements of Manipuri ponies. He highlighted some of the beneficial schemes understand the Union Government for the animal, which can give a thrust to pony owners in Manipur.
He also mentioned the need for collaborative efforts of the Associations, polo clubs, pony owners and particularly the public to move forward to save the grazing grounds and natural habitats.
While giving his presidential speech, Prof Ch Priyoranjan Singh made a clarion call inviting all the polo clubs to actively work to preserve at least one polo ground in every district. He cited the challenges of managing the ponies throughout the year, particularly the stray ones and their migratory nature.
The Workshop and Consultation session was chaired by N Bedajeet Singh, Technical Chairman of MHRPA. With varied inputs and suggestions from the delegates after a threadbare discussion, the Workshop and Consultation mandated the Manipuri Pony Society to submit a memorandum to the Government of Manipur at the earliest to invite a serious rethinking on the dwindling number of ponies and day-to-day challenges.
Considering the importance of the issue, it was agreed to conduct the subsequent Workshop and Consultation after five years instead of ten years. The delegates also urged the Manipuri Pony Society to organise similar discussions when needed to address the issues of ponies in the state.
The need to assist the government in managing the ponies, particularly the stray ones was also registered while urging the government to formulate a concrete and comprehensive policy with adequate budgetary provisions for the managements of ponies, particularly the stray ones in the Municipal areas.
The Workshop also drew the attention of the government to organise regular meetings under the provisions of the Pony Preservation and Conservation Policy to enable all concerned to share valuable information to save the rare breed. UNI NS SSP
