Meghalaya announces sops for street hawkers & vendors amid deadlock in talks

Shillong, July 2 (UNI) Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh accused a handful of leaders within Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA) for deliberately obstructing relocation of hawkers and street vendors to a designated vending zone.
Announcing the July 22 deadline for relocation of hawkers and street vendors, Lyngdoh said the government has offered a package of relocation allowance of Rs 20,000 to vendors holding a valid Certificate of Vending (CoV), comprising an upfront payment of Rs. 10,000 and a monthly allowance of Rs 2,000 for the next five months who agree to relocate.
The MGSPHSVA maintained that the designated vending site at the basement of the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority’s office at Police Bazaar is not ideal for business and termed the eviction drive carried out by the Shillong Municipal Board in Khyndai Lad, a commercial hub here in Meghalaya, as “unilateral” and “illegal”.
However, state commissioner and secretary for urban affairs Dr Vijay Kumar said the entire process of the enforcement exercise and the regulation of street vending being undertaken by the department is regularly monitored by the Meghalaya High Court amid concerns over traffic congestion.
Stating that the relocation process was planned with the vendors for over a year, Lyngdoh said, “This wasn’t done in a flash. We have been in constant touch with all the vendors and even their top leaders have also attended these various meetings. Everything has been properly recorded.”
“Therefore, there seems to be other hidden agenda by some of their leaders. I will not blame all the hawkers, but apparently a few leaders would not like this issue to be resolved. Let me reiterate that the government is committed to ensuring the rule of law,” said Lyngdoh who is also the spokesperson of the MDA government.
