Meghalaya CM proposes to set up mini-secretariats across state

Patharkhmah, Oct 12 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has proposed setting up mini-secretariats across the state to improve the accessibility of government services and alleviate the burden of long-distance travel for routine administrative tasks.
Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a Mini-Secretariat at Patharkhmah in the Ri-Bhoi district, Sangma noted that people residing in the remote areas face significant challenges because they often have to travel to different administrative centres to access government services.
“People should not travel for hours and hours or days for a government service and administration should come closer to the people,” he pointed out.
Emphasising that a building is just a structure, the Chief Minister stated that real governance happens when local and departmental officials actively work to make a difference.
He called on block development officers to serve the citizens with empathy and kindness.
The Chief Minister said the laying of the foundation stone for the Mini Secretariat at Patharkhmah reiterates the government’s commitment to a modern and responsive administration.
“The Mini Secretariat whose foundation stone we lay today will bring the offices of the Patharkhmah Civil Sub-Division together on one campus, so that a citizen can complete related work in one visit instead of travelling between offices,” he said.
The same event saw the opening of the new Jirang Block Office, the new building of Patharkhmah Senior Secondary School and the campus of Patharkhmah Model Degree College.
The Jirang Block Office was inaugurated by Ribansi Jamu, a goalkeeper for the India Women’s National Football Team from the area.
Sangma said it was fitting that the honour went to someone who would inspire young people to follow their passion.
Block offices across the state, he noted, were mostly run from rented or dilapidated buildings, and many are now being renovated or replaced with integrated complexes.
The Jirang C&RD Block was created on March 24, 2001, with its headquarters at Patharkhmah.
For most families in the area, the block office is the first and most frequent point of contact with the government.
Rural roads, housing, water supply, livelihood schemes and village-level works are planned and supervised from it.
The government is investing in block offices across the district. A complex for Mawhati C&RD Block has been approved at Rs 4.50 crore.
Ri-Bhoi has 184 projects costing more than Rs. 1 crore each, with a total approved cost of Rs 1,847.38 crore.
Of these, 14 are complete, 109 are ongoing and 61 have been initiated.
Several serve Western Ri-Bhoi directly, among them a Rs. 16.58 crore steel truss bridge on the Patharkhmah road, a Rs 3.51 crore approach road to the degree college and the Rs. 1.26 crore Jirang Primary Health Centre.
