Minister Ponnam Prabhakar lauds Centre's cashless treatment scheme for road accident victims

Hyderabad, June 25 (UNI) Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar expressed his gratitude to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for launching the “Cashless Treatment Scheme for Road Accident Victims, 2025”, a major initiative aimed at saving lives by providing immediate medical care to accident victims without upfront costs.
Speaking at a preparatory review meeting with officials from various departments, including Transport, Police, Health, Insurance, and NIC at the Secretariat today, Minister Prabhakar said the scheme, introduced under Section 162 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, is a critical step in road safety and emergency healthcare. He emphasised the need for close coordination among all departments to ensure smooth implementation across the state.
The scheme offers cashless medical treatment up to Rs 1.5 lakh per victim within the first week of an accident, regardless of insurance status. Treatment must be initiated within 24 hours of the incident, and services will be provided through hospitals empanelled under Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY and other designated facilities. The data of the victim will be processed through e-DAR (Electronic Detailed Accident Report) and the Transaction Management System (TMS), ensuring real-time tracking and streamlined claim settlement from the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund.
In case of a road accident, anyone can report the incident via the 112 helpline. A 108 ambulance will be dispatched to transport the victim to the nearest designated or non-designated hospital for emergency treatment, followed by transfer to an empanelled hospital. Claims will be processed separately for insured and uninsured or “hit and run” cases.
Minister Prabhakar urged police personnel to act swiftly in documenting accident details through e-DAR and ensuring the legality of the incident is verified within 24 hours for timely claim approval. He called for increased public awareness about the scheme in all police stations and advised setting up additional trauma centres equipped with necessary facilities.
He dispelled the misconception that reporting accidents leads to police cases, encouraging the public to immediately report such incidents to help save lives. The minister also instructed DGP Jitender to ensure state-wide awareness among police officers and requested the Information and Broadcasting Department to run special programmes to promote the scheme.
The scheme will be monitored by district magistrates/collectors and overseen by road safety committees at the state and district levels. Complaints can be raised through the helpline 14555 or to the district grievance officer and the State Road Safety Council.
Minister Prabhakar stated that this initiative is especially beneficial for the poor and vulnerable and urged all officials to treat its implementation as a social responsibility. Senior officials including DGP Jitender, Special Chief Secretary Ahmed Nadeem, Principal Secretary for Health and Family Welfare Christina Z Chongthu, SHOT Chairman Shivsena Reddy, Transport Commissioner Surendra Mohan, UNICEF and NIC representatives, and other key departmental heads attended the meeting, an official statement said.
