Mirwaiz, MLA Langate demands action over parading of Kashmiri man tied to Police vehicle in Jammu

Srinagar, June 25 (UNI) Hurriyat chairman and Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today demanded strict action against those involved in tying a Kashmiri man—accused of theft—to the bonnet of a police vehicle and allegedly parading him through a market in Jammu.

After the video of the incident went viral yesterday on social media, Jammu SSP ordered an inquiry into the matter.

“Is this how Kashmiri’s will be treated in their own land? Stripped of human dignity! Paraded and shamed! Actually it’s a shame on the system and mindset that actively participates to humiliate people on the basis of religion and region, “ Mirwaiz wrote on X.

The incident brought back memories of an army major using a civilian, Farooq Ahmad Dar, as a 'human shield' against stone throwers in Kashmir’s Budgam in 2017.

“And this is not the first time. One Major Gogoi is notorious for similar brutality. Ruling authority and Elected representatives must punish all those involved and bring the perpetrators to book,” Mirwaiz said.

MLA Langate Sheikh Khursheed urged authorities to take “immediate cognisance of the incident and ensure that those responsible for this disgraceful conduct are held accountable”.

“The Jammu bizarre incident where a man accused of theft was publicly humiliated with a garland of shoes and paraded on the streets even made to sit on the bonnet of a moving police vehicle is not just a violation of human dignity, but also a gross abuse of power. No matter the crime, our justice system is governed by the rule of law, not mob mentality or public shaming. Such actions reflect poorly on the very institutions meant to uphold justice and protect individual rights,” Khursheed said.

“I call upon authorities to take immediate cognizance of this incident and ensure that those responsible for this disgraceful conduct are held accountable. Law enforcement must never become a tool for spectacle or humiliation,” he added.
