MMU postpones first district-level ulema meeting at Bandipora amid continued house detention of Mirwaiz

Srinagar, Nov 3 (UNI) The continued house detention of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq for the third consecutive day has forced the Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama (MMU) to postpone its maiden district-level Ulema meeting scheduled for Wednesday in Bandipora, amid uncertainty over his participation.
In a statement, the MMU said the meeting, scheduled at Darul Uloom Raheemiyah, Bandipora, was being organised as a follow-up to the one-day Ulema conference convened by the religious body in Srinagar on September 15, which was attended by over 70 prominent religious scholars representing different schools of thought and regions of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The MMU said September conference deliberated on a range of pressing societal and environmental concerns, including drug abuse, suicides and self-harm, mental and emotional distress among youth, irresponsible use of social media, weakening family bonds, moral decline, inter-sect harmony and the growing disconnect of young people from religious and community institutions.
Environmental degradation and its far-reaching consequences were also discussed, with participants deliberating on the role of Ulema in addressing these challenges through religious guidance, social reform and collective action.
“As part of the follow-up, it was decided to organise district-level meetings across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to widen the outreach and translate the deliberations into concrete initiatives. The Bandipora meeting was to be the first in this series,” the statement said.
The MMU- headed by Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwazi- said all arrangements for Wednesday's meeting had been completed and prominent Ulema were scheduled to participate.
“However, the continued house detention of its patron, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, and uncertainty over his participation left the organisers with no option but to postpone the programme,” the statement said.
Terming his continued house detention deeply unfortunate and condemnable, the MMU said the restrictions interfered with the Mirwaiz's religious and social responsibilities while also obstructing collective efforts by religious scholars towards social reform, unity and community welfare.
On Sunday, Mirwaiz said that he was placed under house detention and alleged that he was being punished for quoting the recently published International Crisis Group report on the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
