MoD signs Rs 53,866-crore contracts with GRSE, GSL for eight next-generation Navy corvettes

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) In a major boost to India's indigenous warship-building programme, the Ministry of Defence on Monday signed contracts worth Rs 53,866.50 crore with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for the construction of eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) for the Indian Navy.
The contracts were signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh at Kartavya Bhawan-2 in New Delhi.
Under the agreement, Kolkata-based GRSE will build five corvettes, while GSL will construct the remaining three vessels. The project marks a significant milestone in India's naval shipbuilding capabilities, as it is the first time that warships indigenously designed by the Indian Navy will be constructed by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) selected through a competitive bidding process.
The next-generation corvettes will be equipped with advanced missiles, weapons systems and sophisticated sensor suites, enabling them to undertake operations across the air, surface and sub-surface domains.
Their induction is expected to substantially enhance the Navy's combat capabilities and maritime security operations, particularly in safeguarding vital sea lines of communication and maritime trade routes. The vessels will also undertake anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare missions, coastal defence, littoral combat, maritime surveillance and sustained presence operations.
Beyond strengthening the Navy's operational preparedness, the project is expected to provide a major boost to India's domestic defence manufacturing and shipbuilding ecosystem by expanding collaboration between public sector shipyards, private shipbuilders and Indian industrial partners, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
The construction programme is projected to generate around 72 lakh person-days of employment directly in the shipyards and another 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and MSMEs over the next decade, providing a significant push to employment and industrial growth.
The project will also encourage greater use of indigenous materials, equipment and technologies, while leveraging Indian technical expertise and skilled manpower. It is aligned with the government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and the broader Make in India drive aimed at reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthening domestic defence production capabilities.
The acquisition of the eight corvettes is expected to reinforce India's maritime combat potential at a time when the Navy is seeking to enhance its operational reach and preparedness across strategically important maritime zones.
