Modi, Tusk push India-Poland strategic partnership, invite joint development of defence and advanced technologies

New Delhi, Oct 22 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Thursday agreed to deepen the India-Poland Strategic Partnership, identifying defence, space, nuclear energy, advanced technologies and economic cooperation as key priorities as the two countries sought to translate closer political ties into concrete strategic and commercial outcomes.
Addressing a joint press conference after high-level bilateral talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi, Modi invited Polish companies to participate in the co-development and co-production of strategic technologies with Indian partners, signalling a push to move beyond conventional trade towards deeper industrial collaboration, technology sharing and joint manufacturing.
Welcoming Tusk to India, Modi recalled his visit to Poland in August 2024, when the two countries elevated their relationship to the level of a Strategic Partnership. “On that visit, we elevated our relations to the status of a Strategic Partnership. On this strong foundation, our partnership has gained new momentum over the past two years,” he said.
Modi said the relationship was rooted not only in diplomatic engagement and economic interests but also in shared democratic values, respect for the rule of law and a longstanding tradition of humanitarian solidarity.
Recalling the Second World War, he highlighted the role played by the royal families of Jamnagar and Kolhapur in providing shelter in India to thousands of Polish children and families displaced by the conflict. The assistance extended to Polish refugees remains an enduring symbol of the historical bonds between the two countries.
The talks reflected the growing importance both governments attach to strengthening economic and strategic engagement amid geopolitical uncertainty, changing global supply chains and intensifying competition in advanced technologies. Modi said India's expanding economic strength and the India-European union Free Trade Agreement had opened up fresh opportunities for cooperation, enabling businesses on both sides to explore greater market access, investment and industrial partnerships.
“Today, we have agreed to deepen our relations in defence, space and nuclear energy. We invite Polish companies to undertake co-development and co-production with India in all these strategic sectors,” Modi said.
The emphasis on joint development and production underlined India's interest in building partnerships that can strengthen domestic manufacturing, facilitate technology transfers and expand indigenous capabilities in strategically important industries. For Poland, closer engagement with India offers an opportunity to increase its commercial and technological presence in one of the world's largest and fastest-growing major economies.
The two sides are also looking to expand cooperation in emerging technologies, renewable energy and other sectors where Polish industrial expertise and investment could complement India's development priorities. The presence of a large Polish business delegation during the visit is expected to provide momentum to discussions on investment, manufacturing and technology partnerships.
Reaffirming India's position on international conflicts, Modi said the two countries shared a commitment to democratic principles and believed that international institutions needed reform to respond more effectively to contemporary challenges. “We believe that reform is necessary to make global governance institutions more powerful and effective,” he said.
Referring to the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, Modi reiterated India's support for peaceful resolutions through dialogue and diplomacy. “Whether it is Ukraine or West Asia, India will continue to support every meaningful effort towards peace,” he said.
The remarks underscored New Delhi's stated preference for diplomatic efforts to resolve international conflicts, even as the wars in Ukraine and West Asia continue to influence relations among major powers and reshape regional security and economic calculations.
Tusk, in turn, spoke warmly of his relationship with Modi, saying he was proud to call the Indian Prime Minister a friend. He said India and Poland had no conflicting interests and emphasised the considerable scope for closer cooperation between the two countries.
Praising India's economic progress, the Polish Prime Minister described the country's leadership as a beacon of hope and said the rapid development of both India and Poland was attracting international attention. His remarks reflected Warsaw's interest in expanding trade, investment, industrial collaboration and political consultations with New Delhi.
Bilateral trade, estimated at around $6 billion, offers considerable room for expansion, particularly through stronger business links, greater investment and cooperation in manufacturing and technology. Both governments are seeking to give the relationship a stronger economic foundation while exploring opportunities for collaboration in sectors with long-term strategic significance.
Tusk is visiting India from October 21 to 23 at Modi's invitation. He is accompanied by Poland's Minister of Finance and Economy, Andrzej Domański, and a business delegation representing nearly 100 companies. The delegation's participation highlights the commercial focus of the visit, with Polish businesses expected to explore investment opportunities and partnerships with Indian companies.
Following the bilateral discussions in New Delhi, Tusk is scheduled to travel to Bengaluru on Friday for meetings with industry leaders and stakeholders in the information technology and space sectors. Business forums in New Delhi and Bengaluru are also intended to bring companies from the two countries together and identify opportunities for sustained commercial engagement.
The visit builds on the Strategic Partnership announced during Modi's historic visit to Warsaw in August 2024, which marked a significant step in India's engagement with Poland. Since then, both countries have sought to broaden their relationship beyond traditional political and economic contacts, with greater emphasis on strategic industries, technology and investment.
Thursday's discussions and the exchange of memorandums of understanding at Hyderabad House formed part of this effort to give the partnership greater substance. The two leaders signalled their intention to convert political goodwill into practical cooperation, with defence production, space exploration, nuclear energy, advanced technology and trade emerging as central pillars of the relationship.
For India, deeper engagement with Poland forms part of a wider effort to diversify economic partnerships, strengthen manufacturing capabilities and expand cooperation with European countries. Poland, meanwhile, sees India as an important partner for business expansion and technological collaboration amid shifts in the global economic and geopolitical landscape.
The immediate challenge for both governments will be to translate the understandings reached during the visit into concrete projects, stronger investment flows and sustained growth in bilateral trade. Modi's invitation to Polish companies to co-develop and co-produce strategic technologies, combined with the two leaders' emphasis on shared democratic values and more effective global institutions, has set an ambitious agenda for the next phase of India-Poland relations.
