Morocco reopens embassy in Syria after years of severed diplomatic ties

Rabat/Damascus, May 18 (UNI) Morocco will reopen its embassy in Damascus, marking a significant shift in its diplomatic stance toward Syria after more than a decade of severed ties.
Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita made the official announcement on the reopening of the embassy on Saturday on behalf of King Mohammed VI during the opening session of the 34th Arab League Summit in Baghdad.
Describing the move as a step toward "opening up broader prospects for the historical bilateral relations" between Morocco and Syria, King Mohammed’s message signals Rabat’s alignment with a broader regional trend of Arab countries restoring formal relations with Damascus, reports Times of Israel.
Morocco originally closed its embassy in Syria in 2012, in response to the outbreak of the Syrian civil war and the Syrian government’s violent crackdown on protests—part of the wider Arab Spring uprisings. Like several other Arab states at the time, Rabat distanced itself from the Assad regime amid international condemnation.
In a statement following his meeting with Bourita, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani expressed “thanks and gratitude” for the decision. He also confirmed that a Syrian technical team will be dispatched to Rabat to prepare for the reopening of Syria’s embassy there, reciprocating Morocco’s planned technical visit to Damascus in the coming days.
The former Assad regime collapsed in December 2024, after a rapid coordinated offensive by Islamist groups, primarily Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), supported by Turkish-backed forces. This offensive led to the fall of major cities, including Homs and Damascus, resulting in Assad fleeing to Moscow.
Following his ouster, the HTS established a caretaker government, appointing Ahmed al-Sharaa (a former Islamic terrorist associated with Al-Qaeda) as interim president. Al-Sharaa signed an interim constitution in March 2025, initiating a five-year transitional period. UNI ANV SSP
