Mumbai resident writes to CM: 'Give me, my child the right to euthanasia'

Mumbai, June 26 (UNI) Mumbai resident Mahadu Belkar has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis requesting that he should be considered for euthanasia (mercy killing).
"If the government cannot help save our children, at least give us the right to euthanasia," Mahadu Belkar requested in his letter to Fadnavis.
Belkar's 15-year-old son Tanesh Belkar is suffering from a rare disease called SSPE (affecting brain). Tanesh has to endure a lot of unbearable pain due to this disease.
Mahadu Belkar expressed his helplessness in the letter as he was not getting any help from the state or central government.
"Our child is suffering from unbearable pain every minute. He cannot move or speak. As parents, we cannot see his pain. If the government cannot help save him, then give us the right to euthanasia," he wrote.
Belkar further said Tanesh is among 67 people in the state who are suffering from the rare disease. "Apart from words of sympathy, there has been no response from officials. The cost of treating SSPE is unaffordable. Our children are dying, but no one seems to be worried. Officials are busy in their own world. We are being kept in suspense. A few days ago, seven-year-old Ovi Puri died," he wrote.

"Ovi's parents spent more than Rs 30 lakh on her illness. But they could not save her," said Belkar.
