Mumbai to host two major PGTI golf championships within a month

Mumbai, Nov 5 (UNI) Mumbai is set for a major boost to professional golf, with two tournaments carrying a combined prize purse of Rs 3 crore scheduled in the region within a month, bringing leading Indian professionals to the city and its outskirts.
The inaugural Shri Shashi Ruia Memorial Golf Championship, carrying a prize purse of Rs 2 crore, will be held at the historic Willingdon Sports Club from January 12 to 15, 2027, following the Rs 1 crore CIDCO Open at Kharghar Valley Golf Course in Navi Mumbai from December 15 to 18, 2026.
The new championship has been included in the DP World Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) calendar through a five-year partnership between DP World PGTI and Essar Foundation, making it an annual fixture until 2031. A Pro-Am event will be held on January 10.
The tournament will honour the late Shashi Ruia, co-founder of Essar along with his brother Ravi Ruia, and a passionate golf enthusiast. His son Prashant Ruia recalled his father's deep association with the sport and said the championship would carry forward his passion as a lasting sporting tribute.
The addition of the tournament marks a renewed push to strengthen Mumbai's professional golfing legacy. The city previously hosted the CG Open at Bombay Presidency Golf Club, which remained a prominent fixture on the PGTI calendar for over a decade from 2007.
The CIDCO Open, meanwhile, will return for its second edition after being inaugurated in December 2025. The tournament was won by Veer Ahlawat.
Together, the two championships are expected to provide Indian professionals with greater competitive opportunities, financial support and a chance to improve their Tour rankings.
DP World PGTI President Kapil Dev emphasised the importance of regular tournaments in nurturing young golfing talent, citing Pranavi Urs' Asian Games gold medal as an inspiration for the next generation.
PGTI CEO Amandeep Johl highlighted the golfing potential of Mumbai and its surrounding regions, including Lonavala and Pune, and said sustained institutional support could help expand the professional circuit.
The five-year commitment from Essar Foundation, alongside CIDCO's continued support, is expected to strengthen the professional golf calendar in the region.
