Nagaland wildlife division reiterates ban on Amur Falcon hunting

Dimapur, Oct 14 (UNI) With thousands of Amur Falcons beginning to arrive in Nagaland, particularly in Pangti village in Wokha district, from South Africa, Somalia and Kenya to roost, the Doyang wildlife division of the forest department on Wednesday issued a stern directive reiterating the ban on hunting and trading of wild animals and birds under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
The order highlights that Amur Falcons, a migratory bird species visiting Nagaland annually, are fully protected under the Act.
It said hunting, trapping, killing, or selling Amur Falcons for food, possession, or trade constitutes a criminal offence punishable with up to seven years of rigorous imprisonment, or a fine of Rs 25,000, or both, under Sections 9 and 51 of the Act.
The warden of the wildlife division has cautioned that appropriate legal action will be initiated against any individual or group found violating these directives.
The order further emphasised that all concerned within the jurisdiction of Doyang Wildlife Division - covering Wokha, Mokokchung, and Zunheboto districts - must strictly adhere to the ban in the interest of conserving wildlife populations.
Authorities have warned that violators will be prosecuted under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, underscoring the government’s commitment to safeguarding biodiversity and ensuring ecological balance in the region.
Nagaland adopted the Act on December 18, 1981, making hunting of wild animals and birds within the state’s territorial jurisdiction strictly prohibited.
The only exceptions under the law are vermin species, such as certain rats, or cases where permission is granted under specific provisions of the Act.
