Nahan clashes: Court sends 11 accused to 3-day police remand , curbs lifted

Nahan, Oct 29 (UNI) A court has granted three-day police remand of 11 accused arrested in connection with the stone-pelting and violent clashes between members of the Valmiki and Sikh communities at Valmiki Chowk in Nahan on October 23.
Police said the accused would be questioned during the remand as part of the ongoing investigation.
Sirmaur Superintendent of Police (SP) NS Negi said a case has been registered at Nahan Police Station under FIR No. 208/2026, dated October 23, under Sections 191(2), 191(3), 190, 132 and 324(4) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with Section 3 of the PDP Act.
The incident left several people, including police personnel and members of both communities, injured. Public and private property was also damaged during the clashes.
According to the police, 11 people allegedly involved in the incident were arrested and produced before the court on Thursday.
The investigation is continuing, and efforts are underway to identify other suspects with the help of technical evidence, SP Negi said.
Meanwhile, the Sirmaur district administration has withdrawn prohibitory orders imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, with immediate effect, citing an improvement in the law and order situation around Valmiki Chowk.
The restrictions were imposed by District Magistrate Priyanka Verma on the evening of October 26 amid concerns over a possible breach of peace following the October 23 clashes.
The administration reviewed the situation before withdrawing the restrictions through an order dated October 28. The decision also took into account the expected rush in the market area on October 29 on account of the Karva Chauth festival.
Despite the withdrawal of prohibitory orders, police will continue preventive measures, including deploying adequate personnel, monitoring sensitive locations and regulating traffic to maintain peace and communal harmony.
The police have appealed to residents to maintain peace, avoid rumours and refrain from posting or forwarding inflammatory or misleading content on social media.
Residents have also been urged to cooperate with the police in maintaining security and traffic arrangements in the market during the festival. People requiring assistance or wishing to share information have been advised to contact their nearest police station.
The police investigation into the October 23 incident is ongoing.UNI SPJ AAB
