Naidu govt. resorting undemocratic tactics to win local body polls: Ex-CM Jagan Reddy

Kadapa, Oct 27 (UNI) Former Chief Minister and YSRCP President YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Tuesday lambasted the Naidu government, accusing it of unfair conduct in the civic elections by resorting to undemocratic tactics.
Addressing party cadre in his home constituency Pulivendula, Jagan alleged that the nomination process itself witnessed irregulatiries and intimidation to prevent opposition candidates from filign their papers. "Unable to face the YSRCP, Chandrababu Naidu is using power to manipulate elections, while sections of the media are supporting the ruling party," he claimed.
The former Chief Minister charged that YSRCP women candidates were stopped at check-posts and on roads, attacked by TDP goons and subjected to saree-pulling, preventing them from filing their nomination papers.
“In Pulivendula town, nominations could be filed in only 20 of 40 wards. Of seven ZPTC seats, contests were allowed in only four. Nomination papers were snatched and torn, while others were rejected during scrutiny. On October 17, candidates were stopped in the morning and again in the afternoon. The YSRCP asked police to transport the candidates and facilitate nominations, but police refused,” he alleged.
“The police fired 37 rounds, injuring two persons in the legs. Twenty stun shells, 40 smoke shells and seven hand grenades were used. Was filing a nomination a crime? Attempt-to-murder cases were registered against 924 people in Pulivendula after police fired on YSRCP workers,” Jagan claimed.
Even after Supreme Court directions, the situation has not changed as the SEC, Collectors or SPs are working on the directions of Naidu, he said. “Our nomination papers were torn in the presence of police and officials. Our rights were snatched away. If tomorrow the same happens to our property documents, what will be the situation?” People are left to fend for themselves and protect their rights and Democracy, he added.
"An attack on any YSRCP worker in Pulivendula would be treated as an attack on YS Jagan himself," he told the cadre, adding that arrests, cases and harassment are nothing new to the YSRCP, recalling that the party was born in Opposition and overcame every difficulty with public support.
