Nanded braces for stormy surge: Yellow alert issued

Mumbai, June 17 (UNI) The Mumbai Meteorological Centre has issued a yellow alert for Nanded district, forecasting severe weather conditions on June 19th and 20th. Residents and authorities are urged to exercise heightened caution.
The advisory predicts strong winds gusting between 40-50 kmph across various parts of the district, accompanied by light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms. In response to this potential natural hazard, the district administration has issued comprehensive safety directives for the public and relevant institutions.
Citizens are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel if thunderstorms are forecast. Specific safety protocols include:
If outdoors: Seek immediate shelter in a substantial building or hard-top vehicle. Once inside, adopt a safe posture by sitting with your head between your knees. Never shelter under trees, in tents, or near metal structures or towers.
If indoors: Stay away from balconies, roofs, windows, and doors. Avoid using corded telephones, taking showers, touching plumbing or metal pipes, and operating electrical appliances. Disconnect electrical devices where possible.
General precautions: Avoid contact with water bodies during storms. Do not stand in water; exit immediately if already in it. Maintain distance from electrical poles, wires, and metallic objects. The administration emphasised that observing a storm through an open window or door carries risks equivalent to being outside.
Additionally, the public is encouraged to download the 'Damini' (lightning tracker) and 'Sachet' (disaster management) mobile applications for real-time alerts on electrical hazards and weather developments.
District officials underscored the seriousness of the situation, reiterating the critical importance of adhering to these precautionary measures to ensure safety during the anticipated severe weather window.
