Nandini price hike ahead of festive season to push up cost of sweets, celebrations

Bengaluru, Nov 5 (UNI) With the festive and wedding season approaching, the increase in prices of Nandini ghee and butter is set to make celebrations costlier, putting additional pressure on sweet manufacturers, bakeries, caterers, hotels and households across Karnataka.
The latest price revision, effective November 4, comes at a time when demand for ghee, butter and other dairy products generally rises for the preparation of sweets, traditional delicacies, bakery items and elaborate wedding menus.
The steepest impact is expected to be felt by sweet manufacturers and catering businesses, for whom ghee and butter are essential ingredients. With higher raw material costs, businesses may have little option but to revise the prices of sweets, savouries, bakery products and catering packages, potentially passing on the burden to customers.
Under the revised rates, one-litre Nandini ghee sachets now cost Rs 850 against the earlier Rs 715, an increase of Rs 135. The one-litre PET jar has gone up from Rs 735 to Rs 870.
The price of 500 gm salted butter has increased from Rs 310 to Rs 380, while unsalted butter now costs Rs 390 against Rs 330 earlier.
Paneer prices have also been revised, with the 200 gm pack rising from Rs 96 to Rs 115 and the one-kg pack from Rs 480 to Rs 485.
The timing of the revision is significant as the festive and wedding seasons traditionally bring increased orders for sweets, traditional food preparations and large-scale catering services. Even a marginal increase in ingredient costs can translate into a substantial rise in expenditure for businesses handling bulk orders.
For families planning weddings and other celebrations, the increase could add to catering expenses, particularly where traditional menus include ghee-rich sweets, desserts and elaborate food preparations.
Small sweet shops, bakeries and caterers could face a difficult choice between absorbing the additional costs and increasing selling prices at a time when customers are already sensitive to rising expenditure.
The revision also brings the pricing strategy of the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) and its affiliated unions into focus, particularly as Nandini competes with private dairy brands.
The latest price changes have been announced by the Bengaluru-based Bangalore Cooperative Milk union (BAMUL). Their applicability across other Karnataka milk unions needs to be established separately.
The increase is likely to renew debate over balancing farmers' interests, operational costs and consumer affordability, especially during a season when dairy products form an important part of celebrations.
