Nashik Municipal Corporation orders closure of slaughterhouses on Gandhi Jayanti

Nashik, Sep 30 (UNI) The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has ordered the closure of all slaughterhouses within its jurisdiction on October 2, 2026, on the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti. The civic body has warned of legal action against anyone found slaughtering animals on the day.
The decision comes amid demands from various Hindu organisations and community members across Maharashtra for the closure of slaughterhouses and meat shops during religious festivals and significant occasions.
Following similar decisions by the municipal corporations of Malegaon and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nashik has also announced restrictions on slaughtering activities.
The order was issued by NMC Veterinary Officer Dr Pramod Sonawane on the instructions of Municipal Commissioner Manisha Khatri.
According to the official notification, in compliance with government directives, all slaughterhouses within Nashik Municipal Corporation limits will remain closed on Friday, October 2.
No animal slaughter will be permitted within the civic body's jurisdiction on that day. Violators will face legal action, the notification stated.
Nashik city has approximately 1,000 meat and fish shops.
However, unlike some other municipal corporations in the state, the Nashik Municipal Corporation has decided to restrict only slaughtering activities, citing the provisions of a 1988 government resolution.
The order does not explicitly direct the closure of meat and fish retail shops.
