NATO commander Alexus unveils ‘theory of victory’ to block, blunt and break any attack

Warsaw, Oct 12 (UNI) NATO's top military commander in Europe, General Alexus Grynkewich, on Monday unveiled a “Theory of Victory” aimed at blocking, blunting and breaking any attack on the alliance, while stressing that a conflict is “neither imminent nor inevitable”.
Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum in the Polish capital, Grynkewich said the strategy is based on “denial defence”, designed to prevent an adversary from seizing and holding NATO territory.
“My theory of victory is simple: we will block the initial attack. If the attack persists, we will blunt it and prevent enemy advance. And if required, we will break the enemy's forces and the operational warfighting system that is arrayed against us,” he said.
Grynkewich stressed that NATO did not anticipate an imminent attack but warned that any aggression against a member state would trigger a military response.
“I do not assess that conflict is imminent or inevitable. It isn't,” he said, adding that NATO was a defensive alliance focused on protecting its people and territory.
“If someone is foolish enough to attack us, we will fight,” he said.“We're rehearsed, and we're ready, and we'll be more ready today, more ready tomorrow, and every day after that,” he added, asserting that the alliance was united and prepared to defend its members.
Under the strategy, NATO's ground forces would seek to stop an invading force at the point of contact, while air and naval forces, backed by space and cyber capabilities, would work to establish battlefield superiority and disrupt enemy operations.
If an attack continued, the alliance would deploy advanced sensors, autonomous systems and coordinated military capabilities to prevent enemy forces from advancing. The final phase would involve targeting not only troops but also command structures, supply networks and other systems sustaining the offensive.
Grynkewich said NATO would combine advanced precision weapons with larger numbers of cheaper, scalable systems to overwhelm attacking forces and undermine their ability to continue fighting. The approach also draws on lessons from modern warfare in Ukraine and the Middle East, he said.
He emphasised that the alliance's objective would be to stop an attack rather than seek the strategic defeat of its adversary, arguing that limiting its military aims could help prevent a wider conflict.
“In executing what I've outlined above, we are not seeking to impose a strategic defeat on our adversary, nor do we need to do so,” he said.
“Rather, we are only seeking to stop any attack in its tracks, to deny the ability to seize and hold our territory.”
Grynkewich said NATO is strengthening its readiness through military exercises and investments in new capabilities. “If attacked, we are ready to fight tonight, but we are not complacent,” he said, adding that the alliance is upgrading eastern-flank defences, long-range precision weapons, intelligence-sharing and surveillance systems to detect threats early and respond swiftly.
The move comes amid NATO's efforts to bolster its defences against Russia following the invasion of Ukraine and growing concerns over suspected sabotage, drone incursions and other hybrid threats across Europe.
Praising Poland's military modernisation, higher defence spending and domestic arms industry, Grynkewich said, “Since joining NATO in 1999, Poland has led by example.” Poland borders Ukraine and Belarus and shares a frontier with Russia's heavily militarised Kaliningrad exclave, placing it on NATO's strategically sensitive eastern flank.UNI AAB
