NCW seeks swift action in brutal dowry torture of Kerala woman

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 8 (UNI) The National Commission for Women (NCW) has sought a fair, thorough and time-bound probe into the alleged brutal physical and mental torture of a 24-year-old postgraduate woman in Kollam over demands for additional dowry.
Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report published on October 4, the Commission said the woman, identified as Anju, was allegedly subjected to relentless harassment and physical abuse by her husband Nandu and his parents.
The alleged torture reportedly took place both in Kerala and Saudi Arabia, where her husband was employed. Anju reportedly sustained around 30 severe bruise marks and blood clots across her body before returning to Kerala on September 30 and approaching the authorities with a complaint.
Chavara Police have reportedly registered an FIR against her husband and his parents in connection with the allegations.
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the concerned authorities seeking immediate legal action to secure the arrest of the accused, who is reportedly in Saudi Arabia.
The Commission has also directed the authorities to ensure preservation of physical and digital evidence and undertake detailed medical and forensic documentation of the injuries. It has sought strict action under the applicable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Dowry Prohibition Act.
The NCW has further sought protection for the survivor and her family, besides ensuring medical treatment, psychological counselling and legal assistance.
An Action Taken Report has been sought from the authorities within seven days.
The Commission said dowry-related violence and cruelty against women were unacceptable and stressed that the safety, dignity and bodily integrity of every woman must be protected without compromise. The NCW helpline is 14490.
