Neeraj Kumar’s 4th consecutive victory amid Anant Singh's opposition brings relief to JD(U)

Patna, Oct 29 (UNI) The Janata Dal (United) heaved a sigh of relief after senior party leader Neeraj Kumar retained the Patna Graduates’ constituency in the Bihar Legislative Council for a fourth consecutive term, overcoming opposition candidates as well as resistance from within his own party.
Kumar secured 19,930 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) candidate Dilip Kumar, who polled 15,275 votes, by a margin of 4,655 votes. Jan Suraaj Party candidate Anuj Singh finished third with 11,278 votes.
The outcome assumes political significance for the JD(U), as Kumar was challenged not only by opposition candidates but also by the campaign mounted against him by party heavyweight MLA Anant Singh. The Mokama legislator had campaigned in support of Anuj Singh, putting the spotlight on internal differences within the ruling party ahead of the election.
Anant Singh, who wields considerable influence in and around Mokama and Barh, has long been regarded as a close political associate of JD(U) president and former Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar. His decision to campaign against the official party candidate had added an unusual dimension to the contest, turning it into a test of the party’s organisational authority and internal cohesion.
Kumar’s victory has enabled the JD(U) leadership to avert an immediate political embarrassment. A defeat for a senior leader and one of the party’s prominent spokespersons could have intensified questions about the organisation’s internal dynamics, particularly at a time when the party’s political position and leadership are under scrutiny.
The Patna Graduates’ constituency was widely regarded as one of the most closely watched contests in the Bihar Legislative Council elections. The campaign attracted attention because of the direct confrontation between the official JD(U) candidate and a rival backed by a legislator from the same party. Opposition parties had sought to highlight the episode as evidence of internal discord within the ruling establishment.
The results also presented a mixed picture for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners. Under the pre-election seat-sharing arrangement for the eight Legislative Council constituencies, four seats had been allotted to the BJP and four to the JD(U). The BJP won three of the four seats allocated to it, while the JD(U) managed to secure only the Patna Graduates’ constituency among its allotted seats.
Against this backdrop, Kumar’s victory assumes importance for the JD(U), even though the result of a single constituency cannot, by itself, be taken as a comprehensive indicator of the NDA’s broader electoral support in Bihar.
The election was followed by disciplinary action against Anant Singh and his wife, Neelam Devi, who were expelled from the JD(U) for six years. The action brought the issue of party discipline into sharper focus and underscored the leadership’s response to campaigning against an officially nominated candidate.
Kumar’s fourth consecutive victory also reinforces his individual political standing in the Patna Graduates’ constituency. Despite the challenge posed by rival candidates and the opposition from within the party, he managed to retain the seat he first won in 2008. His successive victories in 2014, 2020, and 2026 have extended his representation from the constituency.
Aged 59, Kumar is among the JD(U)’s senior leaders and prominent spokespersons. He holds a master’s degree in political science from Patna University and hails from Mokama, the same area represented in the Bihar Assembly by Anant Singh.
Kumar first contested the Legislative Council election in 2002 but failed to win. He subsequently entered the Council in 2008 after winning from the Patna Graduates’ constituency and retained the seat in the 2014 and 2020 elections.
Over the years, Kumar has established himself as a vocal defender of the JD(U)’s policies and the decisions of the Nitish Kumar-led government. He was entrusted with the Information and Public Relations portfolio in the state government in 2019 and has also served as the ruling party’s chief whip in the Legislative Council.
Politically, the result carries three distinct implications for the JD(U). First, the party retained its official seat despite a challenge from within its own ranks. Second, Kumar strengthened his position as an established representative of the constituency. Third, the episode has brought questions of organisational discipline and the balance of authority within the party into public focus.
However, the victory does not necessarily indicate that all internal differences within the JD(U) have been resolved. Nor does it settle the broader questions surrounding the party’s political trajectory, but Neeraj Kumar’s victory provides the JD(U) leadership with immediate breathing space.
