Neeru Dhanda from Jind in Haryana scripts Asian Games history; coach Peter Wilson hails golden run

Chandigarh, Sep 29 (UNI) Haryana-born shooter Neeru Dhanda created history on Tuesday by becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual trap shooting gold at the Asian Games, producing an Asian-record performance at the Aichi-Nagoya Games in Japan.
The 26-year-old from Jind district hit 28 of 30 targets in the final to claim gold ahead of China's Sun Yunong, who finished with 26. Dhanda's score bettered the previous Asian record of 24.
Dhanda had earlier helped India secure silver in the women's trap team event alongside Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer, giving her two medals on a memorable day.
Her coach, Peter Wilson, an Olympic trap champion, has previously described Dhanda's emergence at the highest level as a major breakthrough for Indian trap shooting following her ISSF World Cup triumph at Lonato in July.
“This is huge, not just for Neeru but for Indian trap shooting,” Wilson had said after that victory, praising her ability to perform under pressure.
Dhanda, who comes from a farming family in Sangatpura village of Jind, said after Tuesday's Asian Games triumph that the medal had special significance for her family.
“I want to put this medal around my mother's neck,” she said.
Dhanda had battled illness shortly before the Games, making her record-breaking performance particularly significant.
Her rise has been rapid. In July, she became the first Indian woman to win an individual women's trap gold at an ISSF World Cup, triumphing at Lonato in Italy.
Tuesday's victory also made Dhanda only the second Indian individual trap shooter to win Asian Games gold, after Randhir Singh's men's title in 1978.
