NEIGRIHMS docs saved woman life from “Stump Blowout”

Shillong, June 24 (UNI) A multidisciplinary team of doctors in the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Science (NEIGRIHMS) here in Meghalaya successfully saved the life of a young woman suffering from a rare complication known as a “Stump Blowout”, a medical official said on Tuesday.
“Stump Blowout” — a rare and severe post-surgical complication where a previously closed-off airway reopens, leading to widespread lung infection and life-threatening pneumonia, a medical official said.
The woman was suffering from a rare complication known as a “Stump Blowout”, characterised by widespread lung infection and life-threatening pneumonia due to reopening of a surgically closed airway following a lung resection surgery in 2019.
Unable to undergo immediate surgery due to poor general condition with underlying infection, the patient was stabilised in the ICU on single-lung ventilation.
Then came the game-changing move: instead of opting for high-risk surgery, a multidisciplinary team devised a novel non-surgical solution — a custom-modified Y-shaped silicone stent.
Designed to temporarily seal the damaged airway stump, the stent prevented the spread of infection to the healthy lung and allowed the patient to breathe without ventilator support.
Unlike metallic stents, this silicone device can be safely removed once reconstructive surgery becomes viable.
“This innovative airway management technique offered us the precious time needed to fight the infection and build her strength,” Associate Professor in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, Dr. Vijay Noel Nongpiur, who led the effort, said.
Nongpuir was joined by Dr. Reuben L. Kynta and Dr. Neelamjingbha Sun from the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, and Dr. Advait Mohan from Pulmonary Medicine.
Anaesthesia support during the high-risk procedure was provided by Dr. Aravind (Senior Resident) and Dr. Priyanka Dev (Associate Professor), ensuring the patient remained stable throughout.
Lauding the team’s extraordinary effort, NEIGRIHMS Director Prof. Nalin Mehta said, “is a landmark achievement not only for NEIGRIHMS but for healthcare in the entire Northeast. It demonstrates our capacity to deliver cutting-edge, patient-centric care in the region.”
