Nepal-India holding productive talks on finalising PM Balendra Shah's India visit: Nepal FM Shishir Khanal

Kathmandu, Sep 30 (UNI) Nepal and India are holding positive discussions on Prime Minister Balendra Shah's proposed visit to New Delhi, although no date has yet been finalised, Nepal's Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said on Wednesday.
Speaking to reporters at Tribhuvan International Airport after returning from the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Khanal said both sides wanted the visit to be "fruitful and result-oriented".
"An invitation for the Prime Minister's visit to India was received early on, and Nepal has viewed it positively," Khanal said. "Both sides are positive about undertaking a result-oriented visit at an appropriate time. However, the date for the visit has not been finalised yet."
India formally confirmed in July that it had invited Shah to visit, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended the invitation in a congratulatory message following Shah's appointment in March.
Khanal said Nepal had prioritised engagement with both India and China after the formation of the new government and it had presented its key priorities to both of its neighbouring countries.
The proposed India trip is expected to be Shah's first official bilateral foreign visit since taking office. Preparations for the trip have been under way, with Khanal also discussing it with his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar during the UN General Assembly in New York.
Earlier reports had suggested the visit could take place after the second week of November, though officials said the exact timing remained undecided.
Khanal also described the UN General Assembly session as highly productive for Nepal, saying he used bilateral and multilateral meetings with world leaders and foreign ministers to highlight the country's national priorities.
He said Nepal had raised the situation following the Bhotekoshi floods and the challenges posed by climate change, while seeking greater international attention to post-disaster management.
"We have prioritized Nepal's national interests by making the most of opportunities for bilateral and multilateral discussions with heads of state, heads of government, and foreign ministers from around the world during the United Nations General Assembly," he said.
"In doing so, we have clearly presented the post-disaster situation following the Bhotekoshi floods and the challenges Nepal faces due to climate change on the international stage, while leveraging every possible opportunity." he added.
