New Zealand pacer Will O’Rourke ruled out of India tour with injuries

New Delhi, Oct 10 (UNI) New Zealand fast bowler Will O’Rourke has been ruled out of the upcoming home series against India as he continues to recover from injuries to his left hamstring and calf.
O’Rourke had returned to action earlier this year after spending seven months on the sidelines with a back stress fracture. However, he suffered a hamstring tear on the final day of New Zealand’s third Test against England, which the hosts won to clinch the series 2-1. He subsequently strained his calf during a training session in late August.
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said the team had decided to give the 25-year-old more time to recover rather than risk an early return ahead of a demanding international schedule.
“It’s obviously disappointing for Will to have to miss such a marquee tour at home against India,” Walter said.
“He was set to feature in both the ODI and Test series, but following subsequent discussions, we all agreed it was best for him to take some more time to rehabilitate both injuries and safely build up his bowling loads,” he added.
Walter added that New Zealand were taking a cautious approach, with their pace-bowling resources expected to be crucial over the coming months.
The team hopes O’Rourke will return for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield in late December, with the fast bowler potentially available for the opening Test against Australia in Perth on December 9.
New Zealand Cricket said the ODI squad for the India series would be announced on Sunday, October 11.
The multi-format tour will begin with a five-match T20I series on October 22 in Christchurch. The teams will then play five ODIs from November 4 as they prepare for next year’s ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, followed by a two-Test series starting November 19 as part of the World Test Championship cycle.UNI TB AAB
